CAL VAL RAT TERRIERS HISTORY: We have been loving and raising Rat Terriers for 26 years in Central California. This is a FAMILY LEGACY as my grandparents raised them in the early 1920's in Grand Island Nebraska. My mother grew up with them and raised them all her life until she passed away in the year 2000.. My children and now my grandchildren have raised them as well, This is all part a big part of our family history. DOG SHOWS: We started showing Rat Terriers in 1999 when they were first accepted in UKC (United Kennel Club) and now we show them in AKC (American Kennel Club) We do this to validate the quality we are trying to breed. We don't expect expect our puppies to go into show homes but sometimes they do ... and we are thrilled. Most of our puppies are sold to PET HOMES and that's fine with us. HEALTH TESTING: We breed only DNA tested adults who are CLEAR of PLL and PRA-PRCD. These are devastating eye diseases that can lead to blindness. We feel they can and should be eradicated from the Rat Terrier gene pool by only breeding CLEAR. Not everyone shares our opinion on this. SIZES and COLORS: MINIS and SMALL STANDARDS ... from 10 to 15 inches is our goal. Athletic build but not so big they bruise you will sitting on your lap. We breed most of the Breed Standard colors but that is not our main focus. Health, Temperament, and Structure are our main concern as most of our puppies go into families to become the treasured family companion. PREY DRIVE: Most Rat Terriers will have a natural inclination to kill rodents. That's fine and quite amazing when you see it. But we do not breed for this trait. A high prey drive may not be a good thing with young children. So, if you are looking for a Rat Terrier to kill the rodents in your barn we are happy to refer you to other breeders who's dogs are very skilled It's an amazing trait but it's low on our priority list.
